Bruno Mars + Red Hot Chili Peppers Croon and Rock During 2014 Super Bowl Halftime Show [VIDEO]
Crooner Bruno Mars provided the halftime entertainment for Super Bowl XLVIII with an assist from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a children’s choir, the members of which held hands as they sang like cherubs for the first 30 seconds.
Mars began his performance seated behind a drum kit and rocking a gold blazer. He smashed away at the skins, getting the crowd percussively pumped. The singer’s hair remained aerodynamic as he joined his band of doo-wopping hooligans on the main stage to launch into ‘Locked Out of Heaven.’
While Mars is a modern crooner, his performance and unorthodox jukebox of tunes certainly appeals to all generations, since it is a bit throwback-y.
He dove into ‘Treasure’ and ‘Runaway Baby’ and it was high octane throughout the first three songs and extremely entertaining.
The fancy footwork he displayed during ‘Runaway Baby’ — including that impressive split — should have impressed your parents.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers showed up shirtless — at least singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea did — to sing their 1991 hit ‘Give It Away,’ a funked out rock jam that totally fit Mars’ vibe and style. During the song, Mars sang along and rocked out. Again, his hair did not move. RHCP performed like it was the biggest gig of their career, since, well, it was.
Watching both bands jump up and down made us want to jump on our couches like Tom Cruise did on Oprah!
Before Mars performed ‘Just the Way You Are’ amid fireworks, pre-taped footage of military servicemen and women sending love and greetings to their families unfolded onscreen.
No gimmicks. No drama. No nonsense. Mars’ performance was all about the music. It was classic crooner style and erased the line between generations and genres. If there was a halftime report card, Mars would earn an A. His performance appealed to viewers of all ages.
