Back=to-school season is in full swing, and even though the end of summer pretty much stinks, heading back to class doesn't have to. Why? For starters, it's the perfect time to sport some apples and notebooks and maybe even a pencil or two on those nails.

This week was full of fashion home runs, courtesy of Jessica Chastain and Helen Mirren, who were both red hot in figure-hugging dresses, while Cate Blanchett went fashion-forward in a powder pink Balenciaga gown with a hula-like construction and tentacles that just didn't work for us.

This week's best ensembles were dresses --in leather and sequins, even in summer -- while the worst were largely menswear mishaps. Actress Naomi Watts owned in a black leather McQueen frock, while the usually quirky Maggie Gyllenhaal did the peplum trend in a unique yet all wrong way, adding pounds via an unflattering embellishment. This week's best and worst dressed celebs were a mixed bag. The First Lady Michelle Obama wore a bowed Carolina Herrera dress that might have been too cutesy on anyone else, while Jennifer Lopez went Southern Belle in a dress that wasn't hideous but it just wasn't ... her.

Stars and celebs are busting out their best summer-ready attire this week, even at dressy events. Katie Holmes was a vision in a white Chloe frock, while Miley Cyrus was, hands-down, the worst dressed we've seen all year. Punk chic is one thing. Forced punk chic is something else entirely.

It was a week fashion triumphs: Angelina Jolie returned to the red carpet and looked stunning not once but twice, and Emma Watson was a champ in Chanel. Lingerie and undergarment retailer Victoria's Secret ignited the ire of Sports Illustrated swimsuit model (and former VS catalog model) Kate Upton by recently using an old photograph of her -- without her permission. This, of course, after a company rep said they'd never hire her to model in their fashion shows because she's just not classy enough for them.

With Cannes and spring in full effect, we witnessed our fair share of dingers, duds and darling attire. There was Jessica Alba (who rarely, if ever, has a red carpet miss) in a lovely LBD, while Solange shocked us with what could double as sleepwear...

The weather is getting warmer, so celebs are showing more skin as they dress for red carpet events. As is the standard, we had some stunners (Kate Beckinsale, like, whoa) and some stinkers (Diane Kruger, with too-loud pants) -- and saw lots of skin, be it bare or peeking out from fabric in both good and bad ways.
