The Olympics are about to begin in London. Sure, it’s a great gathering of the world’s most amazing athletes doing their thing, where competitors try to smash records quicker than you can say Zemfira Meftakhetdinova (seriously, that’s a real person going for the gold).
Gymnast Aly Raisman was one of the big stories of the opening weekend of the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games. The 18-year old from Needham, Ma. qualified for the all-around title, knocking teammate, world champion and best friend Jordyn Wieber out of the competition that Wieber would have been the favorite in.
But the most entertaining part of Raisman’s near flawless routine was her parents’ reaction to it.
Despite being eight months pregnant, Nur Suryani Mohammed Taibi of Maylasia finished 34th among the competitors in the women’s 10-meter air rifle event at the Summer Olympics in London on Saturday. Taibi, 29, entered the London Games ranked 47th in the world in the 10-meter air rifle.

After yesterday’s Opening Ceremony, the 2012 Summer Olympics had its first full day of competition on Saturday.
Last night’s Olympics kicked off with a spectacular mix of pop and pageantry under the artistic direction of Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle. From an American perspective, the opening ceremony in London seemed comprised of the best partsof an Oscar telecast, a Macy’s parade and a Super Bowl halftime show. In short, it was courtly and dignified but also wild and funny, altogether both odd enough and impressive enough to arouse a lot of talk and Tweets this weekend.
