Early Monday morning detectives from the Juvenile Unit were dispatched to United Regional Health Care 11th Street Emergency Room after a child with an injury from a gunshot was brought in for treatment.

According to the Wichita Falls Police Department, a parent was dropping a child off at the daycare at 4725 Kmart.  A 4 year-old child was left unattended in the vehicle. The child removed a handgun that was left under the front driver’s seat of the vehicle. The weapon had a round in the chamber and the child was able to accidentally fire the weapon.  The round left the vehicle and struck the daycare building.

The 4 year old was hit in the head by the recoil of the handgun causing an open wound to his left forehead. The wound is non-life threatening but did require medical treatment.  No other injuries reported. The incident is being investigated as endangering a child.
