After weeding through a group of young actresses that included Lindsay Lohan, Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning, Haley Bennett, and Lily Collins, MGM and Screen Gems have officially offered the lead role in their remake of "Carrie" to Chloe Moretz.

When the project was originally announced, author of the original book Stephen King suggested Lindsey Lohan for the role originally played by Sissy Spacek in 1976, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance.  Rumor has it that though Moretz was a contender in the minds of the producers and director Kim Pierce from the start, she didn't actually audition until a few days ago, securing the role with her audition.  The 15-year-old Moretz has built an impressive reputation in Hollywood in such a short time with critically praised roles in "Kick-Ass", "Let Me In", the Oscar nominated "Hugo", and the upcoming "Dark Shadows".  If Moretz accepts the role, which she is expected to, she will actually be half the age Spacek was while making the original.

The story of "Carrie" is about a shy high school student named Carrie White who is regularly abused by her religiously fanatical mother.  Due to Carrie's sheltered upbringing, she is ignorant of many things in life, such as having her first period.  When she has her first period in the gym showers, Carrie become hysterical, believing that she is dying.  After being ridiculed by other students and punished by her mother who said that the "curse of blood" was a sign of sin, Carrie develops telekinetic powers.  Originally using her powers to shatter a mirror in her room or knock over a teasing boy on his bike, her abilities grow over the course of the movie, reaching their peak during an iconic scene were Carrie is covered in pig's blood by other students during prom.

A televison remake was made 10 years ago, starring Angela Bettis as the title role.  Though Bettis' portrayal was praised, many criticised the film for following the original too closely, then changing the ending of the film.

Though other cast members have not yet been confirmed, Jodie Foster has been a rumored lead contender for the role of Carrie's fanatical mother Margaret.
