Deer Hanging From Power Lines Causes Power Outage

Residents in Montana were recently questioning the cause of a power outage – only to find out a fawn was hanging from the power lines! It begs the question, “Can deer really fly?”

Of course power outages can happen for any number of reasons. I get mini-blackouts at least 3 times a week at my house, which means I’ve given up on setting any of my clocks. Luckily they’re quick outages, only lasting about 5 seconds each. I chalk it up to wind, but who knows.

For residents in Helena, however, they have their answer. When Lee Bridges asked an energy worker what had caused her outage, he answered, “Apparently, we’ve got deer with wings.”

Though it’s speculation, the assumption is that an eagle lost its prey and was unable to retrieve it off the power line. If eagles can carry a fawn, it makes me want to stay away from them.

If nothing else, it’s a much better reason for an outage than wind or something mundane. How often do you see a deer hanging on some power lines?
