Over the past fifty years, the 1,200-year-old Time Lord has defeated the Daleks, Cybermen, and Weeping Angels, but now we can add a Guinness World Record to his list of accolades.

Leading up to the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the BBC featured a look back at each of the eleven men to play the Doctor, marathons of fan favorite episodes, and online minisodes, all culminating with the epic special, The Day of the Doctor, airing fifty years to the day William Hartnell first stepped foot on the TARDIS in the first episode.  The Day of the Doctor would bring together current Doctor Matt Smith and previous Doctor David Tennant with John Hurt playing a Doctor that fans didn’t even know existed until a few months ago, revisiting the darkest day in the Doctor’s long life.  Full of references and shocking cameos, The Day of the Doctor was simulcast across the world in 94 countries on 6 continents, a feat that earned the series a Guinness World Record for largest simulcast for a television drama.

Receiving the award earlier today at the Doctor Who Celebration, Executive Producer and Writer Steven Moffat said,

For years the Doctor has been stopping everyone else from conquering the world.  Now, just to show off, he’s gone and done it himself!

Tim Davie, CEO of BBC Worldwide, commented on the complexity of pulling off such a massive simulcast, which included a half-million tickets sold in 1,500 movie theaters world-wide,

We knew we were attempting something unprecedented in broadcast history, not only because Doctor Who is a drama, unlike a live feed event such as a World Cup football match or a Royal Wedding, but because we had to deliver the episode in advance to the four corners of the world so that it could be dubbed and subtitled into 15 different languages. If there was any doubt that Doctor Who is one of the world’s biggest TV shows, this award should put that argument to rest – and how fitting for it to receive such an accolade in its 50th year.

The last time the BBC did a simulcast for Doctor Who was back in August when the announcement of Peter Capaldi's casting as the next Doctor was broadcast in the UK, America, Canada, and Australia.  Next up for the Doctor is the 2013 Christmas Special that will mark the departure of Matt Smith as the Doctor, with his Doctor regenerating into Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor.
