If landing a photo with Emma Watson is on your Instagram bucket list, you should probably go ahead and amend it. The Harry Potter icon and Beauty and the Beast star says — for security reasons — she's done taking camera-photos with fans.

In a new interview with Vanity FairWatson says her experiences with obsessed fans in the past have put her on edge, and made it so she simply can't risk her whereabouts being so routinely documented on the internet and social media.

"For me, it's the difference between being able to have a life and not," she said. "If someone takes a photograph of me and posts it, within two seconds they've created a marker of exactly where I am within 10 meters. They can see what I'm wearing and who I'm with. I just can't give that tracking data."

Watson says she does make exceptions for children, though, and says she'll frequently stop to chat with fans, instead. She acknowledges, too, that it's bizarre to have to even consider the nuance of fan interaction, because she still doesn't identify with celebrity culture. There have been moments through her career when she 'shad to stop and ask if acting, which she loves, is worth the constant stress of being a public-facing star.

"I'd walk down the red carpet and go into the bathroom," she recalls. "I had on so much makeup and these big, fluffy, full-on dresses. I'd put my hands on the sink and look at myself in the mirror and say, 'Who is this?' I didn't connect with the person who was looking back at me, and that was a very unsettling feeling."

So, she's learned how to pick her battles, and says she's made a firm rule to keep her personal live private. She says agents and producers have argued that more intimate details could help Watson's work, but she's still against the idea of oversharing.

"There have been hard moments in my career when I've had an agent or a movie producer say, 'You are making a big mistake,'" she adds. "But what's the point of achieving great success if you feel like you're losing your freakin' mind? I've had to say, 'Guys, I need to go back to school,' or 'I just need to go home and hang out with my cats.' People have looked at me and been like, 'Is she insane?' But, actually, it's the opposite of insane."
