The location of the center was chosen to provide convenient access for the citizens of Wichita Falls.  All animal control services will be located in this facility as well as reclaim services for animals picked up by animal control. Christmas in Action is a non-profit organization that since 1983 has repaired the homes of low-income elderly or disabled residents of Wichita County.    The repair work requested could involve painting\, yard work\, replacing broken windows\, repairing or replacing a roof\, building wheelchair ramps\, installing deadbolts\, fixing leaky faucets\, and just about anything else that could go wrong with a house.  The materials to do the repair work are paid for with donations or grants.    Volunteers are needed from church groups\, civic organizations\, co-workers\, Sheppard AFB\, or other groups who are willing to work on the homes.  The team should select a leader to attend one of the House Captain Orientations on the following dates:    Monday – March 28\, 2011 at 6 pm for First time house captains.    Tuesday – March 29\, 2011 at 6 pm for Previous house captains.    Saturday – April 2\, 2011 at 10 am for Make up for any house captain.    Project Selection night will be held on Tuesday\, April 5\, 2011 at 6 p.m.   The location for selecting homes will be at 1st Presbyterian\, 3601 Taft Blvd. in Wichita Falls.   At this time the house captain will select the house project the group will  work on according to the number of volunteers and the skills of the group.    The project workday\, which is always on the last Saturday in April\, will be on 30 April 2011.    Participants with the Christmas in Action program will receive a volunteer T-shirt in appreciation of their willingness to help some of our neighbors in need. The compost will be loaded for participants with a limit of one pickup truck or 4x8 trailer load per person.    Participants must provide a City of Wichita Falls water bill showing the $3.00 recycling program charge.    All loads must be covered. This is a state law. Sanitation employees are required to see the participants cover material before loading the compost.    No dump trucks\, commercial vehicles or over-sized trailers will be loaded.    For commercial operation compost purchases please contact the Wichita Falls Sanitation Department at 761-7977.    Directions to the landfill are: take Seymour Highway Southwest toward Seymour to Highway 258\, located at the Kamay “Y\,” proceed West on Highway 258 toward Kamay approximately one mile to Wiley Road and turn right (North) travel two miles and you will see the entrance to the landfill.    Uses for compost  Compost contains nutrients\, but is not a substitute for fertilizers.  Compost holds nutrients in the soil where all plants can use them\, loosens and aerates clay soils\, and retains water in sandy soils.    As a soil amendment:  Mix two to five inches of compost into vegetable and flower gardens each year before planting.    As a potting mixture:  Add one part compost to two parts commercial potting soil\, or make your own mixture by using equal parts of compost and sand or perlite.    As a mulch:  Spread an inch or two of compost around annual flowers and vegetables\, and up to six inches around trees and shrubs.  As a top dressing:  Mix finely\, sifted compost with sand and sprinkle evenly over lawns.

In order to bring attention to the staggering number of cases of abuse reported in Wichita County last year\, Patsy’s House Children’s Advocacy Center have placed 1\,340 pinwheels at Patterson Honda at the corner of Jacksboro Highway and Central Freeway.  Each pinwheel represents one report of child abuse in Wichita County in 2010.    Patsy's House Children's Advocacy Center\, Inc. helps seek healing and justice for abused children. Each time justice is achieved\, the benefits are immeasurable – bringing hope and a brighter future for each child victim and for the community who opens its hearts to them.    A $20.00 gift to Patsy’s House will remove a pinwheel from the corner. The goal is to remove all the pinwheels during the month of April\, and through this\, help end the cycle of child abuse … one pinwheel at a time.

DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_5615" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Photo by freeloosedirt/Flickr"][/caption]    Everyone is invited to join City leaders\, supporters and organizers for the grand opening of the City’s new Off-Leash Dog Facility (more often being referred to as “Wichita Paws” or “Wichita Paws Dog Park”)\, at Lake Wichita Park\, beginning at 8:45am.  The facility utilizes a converted soccer/football field at the north end of the park. By beginning with an already developed area city staff was able to utilize existing fencing\, irrigation\, parking and land already graded for drainage\, which saved significant costs for the project.    An appropriation of $10\,000 from the 4B Sales Tax Fund allowed for further improvements to complete the dog park including: : adding additional fencing\, two double gate entries\, irrigation improvements\, minor paving and signage. The final result is two dog parks in one with an area for small dogs (under 30 pounds) and one for large dogs (over 30 pounds).    There are very specific rules for participation at the park that have been developed by citizens\, the Health Department\, Parks Department and Police Department. The most basic rules are that the park is open from dawn to dusk\, only two dogs per visitor\, all animals are to have current vaccinations and display vaccination tags at all times and that all waste must be removed by owners.    The complete list of rules and regulations is displayed at the entrance to the park. These rules cover a wide range of important issues to consider before using the park and participants are urged to familiarize themselves with this information before entering the facility. DESCRIPTION:     [caption id="attachment_6610" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Facebook"][/caption]    On Tuesday\, June 14th\, 2011\, thousands of kids and adults at aquatics facilities around the globe will unite to set a new global record for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL). Castaway Cove is an official Host Location for the 2011 WLSL record-setting event\, taking place at 10:00 AM central time.    There is no cost for anyone to participate in the The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ event.  Registration for the will begin at 9:00 AM on June 14th at Castaway Cove with the lesson beginning promptly at 10:00 AM and ending before the park opens at 11:00 AM. All registrants will receive a certificate of participation.  The maximum number that can register for the lesson is 50.  Additional guests can watch the lesson.    The inaugural WLSL event established the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted in 2010 when almost 4\,000 participants across 34 states\, five countries and 3 continents participated to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning.    The WLSL program works to promote drowning prevention through education by focusing the energy of thousands of participants on a clear and specific message all at the same time. In 2010\, aquatic facilities\, from Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon near Orlando\, Florida to swim schools in Orange Country\, CA\, to parks & recreation centers in the Bronx\, to locations in Mexico\, Dubai and the USAG Humphreys in South Korea\, all taught the same swimming lesson at the same time with one goal in mind  – send the message that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™. Sill Adventure Travel office for all military\, civilian personnel\, and their families.    “We are excited to provide this free admission and discounted admission opportunity to those individuals that work every day in the different positions at Ft. Sill” said Ed Michel\, spokesperson for Castaway Cove.  “We very much appreciate Ft. DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_7172" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images"][/caption]    Due to extremely dry weather and high fire danger the rescheduled “4th  in the Falls” celebration has been moved again. The event had been  rescheduled for Saturday\, September 3rd but is now scheduled to  Saturday\, December 31st. After carefully monitoring  current and long-range weather forecasts the decision was made by City  staff to move the event to adhere to current burn bans\, firework  restrictions and protect the health and safety of citizens who may have  attended the event.    “This is an excellent opportunity to provide the city with an  exciting New Year’s Eve celebration\,” said MPEC Director\, Bob Sullivan.  “Rather than cancelling the event due to the current weather conditions  we’re moving the festivities to News Year’s  Eve\, which will provide families throughout the area with an exciting  event to ring in 2012\,” said Sullivan.    Also in the consideration to reschedule the event was a sincere  desire to curtail any fireworks use outside the fireworks display that  was planned at MPEC. City staff did not want the public to be left with  the impression that fireworks restrictions  had been lifted.    “The conditions for a significant fire event have not changed\,”  said Assistant Fire Chief William Weske. “Just yesterday our department  battled a 30 acre blaze near Tanglewood. 100 residents had to be  evacuated and homes were threatened. We just can’t  take a chance with someone feeling that it’s alright to use fireworks  during this time\,” said Weske.    Current plans for the December 31st event will maintain the original  schedule\, children’s activities\, food and drink opportunities and  fireworks display. The live music performances will change and be  announced as the event date nears.

DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_7283" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="Facebook"][/caption]         Step back in time with the Wichita County Heritage Society this Fourth of July!  It’s time to bring out your red\, white\, and blue as we honor America with our 28th Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration and “Most Patriotic” Parade on Monday\, July 4th\, 2011!    The festivities begin with an open registration for the “Most Patriotic” Parade at 8:15 a.m. at the Old Post Office Building\, 801 8th Street (the corner of 8th and Ohio).  Prizes will be awarded in each of six categories:  Children 0-5\, Children 6-10\, Children 11 & up\, Pet\, Antique Car\, and Specialty.  A grand prize Spirit Award will be presented to the most patriotic entry in the parade.    The parade will begin at 9:00 a.m.\, winding its way from the Old Post Office along Ohio to 9th Street\, and down to the Kell House Museum.  Spectators are invited to line up along the parade route to cheer on their favorite entries and wave to local dignitaries\, Lady Liberty\, and Uncle Sam!    After the parade\, the Kell House will host an old-fashioned salute to America\, complete with the presentation of award winners.  Children as Thespians will perform live music and patriotic readings.  Then let the games begin!  A Cake Walk\, Fishing Game\, and Beanbag Toss are just some of the fun to be had from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Meet Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty.  Get a patriotic temporary tattoo\, have you hair painted\, enjoy a hot dog and some ice cold lemonade\, or simply share a few smiles with other members of our community. The meal price will by donation only.    “Friends of Jerry Busby” will have lunch of burgers and hot dogs for the public by the Waurika Volunteer Firemen plus home-made side-items.  There will be several auctions (live and silent) with 100% going for cancer treatment.    Jerry Busby was born 60 years ago in Wichita Falls\, raised in Burkburnett and resided in Waurika for the past 30 years.  He was struck with cancer this spring and passed away last week.    Known as “The Pie Man”\, Jerry and his family operated the Original Fried Pie Shops in Waurika and Wichita Falls…helping many groups raise money for lots of projects. It is very difficult to get the rights to this show.  Wichita Theatre is one of only a handful of theatres around the country that has been able to obtain the licensing rights.  For that reason\, we had people come from as far away as Kansas City to audition.    This all-star cast features Emily Clements (Tracy)\, Jeremy Motley (Edna)\, Abigail Clements (Amber)\, Whitney Longcrier (Velma)\, Sydney Frank (Penny)\, Nancy Brasfield (Prudy)\, Jonathan Barnes (Link)\, Michael Sherry (Corny)\, along with Ann Arnold from KFDX and Little Meg from NIN as singing/dancing prisoners.  All of these performers are highly sought after by directors for their extensive stage experience and loved by audiences throughout Texoma.    Hairspray features a dozen black actors/singers/dancers in starring and supporting roles...such as Mineasa Nesbit (playing Motormouth Maybelle) who is the choir teacher at Hirschi\, Jeremy Saxton (playing Seaweed) who is a dance instructor for Dance\, Etc. in Wichita Falls and Eddie Randle (playing Gilbert) from KFDX.    In short\, this is the largest\, most anticipated\, most requested modern production ever launched by The Wichita Theatre and we are so proud of our cast and crew on this one.  This will be THE show to see for our 103rd Anniversary Season during 2011. DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_10841" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Photo by Johannes Simon/Getty Images"][/caption]    Former Wichitan Lenora Eve brings her New York\, NY staff to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls\, Texas for the Inaugural Opera Breve Vocal Institute\, July 24 through August 7th\, 2011.    As the Artistic Director and founder of Opera Breve\, Ms. Eve has assembled a staff with world renowned Mezzo-Soprano Eugenie Grunewald  and her Associate Director and musical theater star of stage and screen Rich Affannato to coach and direct the students.  Gary Norden\, a New York City based vocal coach and accompanist that has worked with Metropolitan Opera singers\, will work with the students and provide piano accompaniment for Suor Angelica and operatic selections.  Dr. Donald Maxwell\, MSU's own Professor of Voice and Mr. Jan McDaniel\, Associate Professor of Vocal Coaching and conductor of the Oklahoma City University Opera and Musical Theater Company round out the musical staff for the two week vocal intensive.  The singing participants are from North Texas\, Oklahoma and New York.    Three public performances will be presented by the 18 student participants to the community in Akin Auditorium on the MSU campus.    Thursday August 4th at 7:30 PM\, Musical Theatre Scenes  Saturday August 6th at 3:00 PM\, Opera Scenes  Sunday August 7th at 3:00 PM\, Puccini's Suor Angelica (An opera in one act)    All performances are open to the public and free of charge.

DESCRIPTION:  Information:  Bicycles are one of the most requested items from children year after year\, and the goal of Operation Santa Claus\, and the Wichita Falls Professional Fire Fighters Association is to make sure that no child goes without during the Christmas season.    92.9 NIN will be conducting a "Bikes or Bust" event beginning Wednesday\, November 30th and running through Saturday\, December 3rd. Chris Callaway will LIVE and BROADCAST for four days at the top of a scissor lift in the parking lot of Nissan of Wichita Falls with the goal of having 500 or more bicycles donated to Operation Santa Claus for local underprivileged children this Christmas.  How You Can Help:  During the event\, the public will have the opportunity to donate new bikes\, or make a cash donation of $45 that will allow Operation Santa Claus to purchase one new bike.  All bikes donated will be displayed out in front of Nissan of Wichita Falls\, and\, only be distributed to children in this area through Operation Santa Claus or our affiliate charities.  Additionally\, Sheppard Air Force base will be providing volunteer airmen to assemble bicycles during the event. Guests will be able to select a hand crafted pottery bowl from a large selection as a souvenir to remind them of all the empty bowls in the area.  Empty Bowls will include Live music and a simple meal of soups and breads from local restaurants. Representatives from Region 9 Education Center\, the Public Library and Zavala\, as well as Gonzalo Robles-Educational Consultant with Café con Leche\, and Midwestern State University’s Bilingual Education students\, will be on hand to assist.  Parents are asked to bring 2012 tax forms\, if completed or W-2 forms\, social security number\, plus picture ID.  If students already have PIN numbers for the FAFSA\, they are asked to bring those as well. DESCRIPTION:Region 9 Education Service Center will be presenting a Financial Aid Event for all area high school seniors and their parents on Thursday\, February 28th from 5pm-9pm at Region 9 Education Service Center.    The North Texas Area United Way will assist parents of high school seniors in filing their taxes\, so that the FAFSA\, Free Application for Federal Student Aid\, and the TASFA\, Texas Application for State Financial Aid\, can be submitted. Representatives from Region 9 Education Center\, the Wichita Falls Public Library and Zavala Hispanic Initiative\, as well as Gonzalo Robles-Educational Consultant with Café con Leche\, and Midwestern State University’s Bilingual Education students\, will be on hand to assist. Parents are asked to bring 2012 tax forms\, if completed or W-2 forms\, social security number\, plus picture ID. If students already have PIN numbers for the FAFSA\, they are asked to bring those as well.    Seniors from all area high schools are welcome to attend. Refreshments and childcare will be provided. DESCRIPTION:The Hotter’N Hell Hundred is one of the oldest and largest cycling events in the nation. Fitness oriented riders and bicycle racers will come to Wichita Falls\, Texas\, from virtually every state and several foreign countries.    Dates and Times:  Hotter'N Hell Hundred 2013 will take place August 23-25. The official HHH Endurance Ride start will be approximately 7:00 a.m. (official sunrise) on Saturday\, Aug. 24\, 2013. The USA Cycling Road Race is Saturday\, Aug. 24\, 2013 with USA Cycling Criterium racing on Friday and Sunday. The HHH will continue to offer a mountain bike race on Friday\, August 23\, 2013 and a trail run on Sunday\, August 25\, 2013 as well.    What to Expect:  Several things happen during the Hotter’N Hell weekend. The activities that comprise the HHH are: Registration\, Consumer Show\, Spaghetti Dinner\, USA Cycling Criterium Race\, USA Cycling Road Race\, the Hotter’N Hell Hundred Endurance Ride\, an Off-Road bicycle race\, off-road trail run along with entertainment food and fellowship at the Finish Line Village. In other words\, HHH is not just one day\, it is at least 4 days of challenging and inspiring activities.    Registration:  HHH has worked hard to keep entry fees as low as possible. Early registration is still $30 and will expire June 30\, 2013. After July 1\, 2013\, regular registration will be $35. To help families\, there is a family discount available during early registration. The family discount is applied to registrations from the same household after the first full fee is paid. The maximum is 5 discounts per household. The family rate is $25 per person. The family discount is only available during early registration which expires June 30\, 2013. All family discount registrations need to be received at one time and paid all together. Riders can register online\, by mail\, fax\, or in person at late registration. Late registration is $45.
