In a week filled with casting rumors for the Superman/Batman team-up, Girls star Adam Driver is now the reported frontrunner for the role of Batman’s estranged former sidekick, Nightwing.

According to The Wrap, Adam Driver is the lead contender among three actors for the role of Dick Grayson/Nightwing, a role being described by casting sources as a “young John Hawkes”.  Driver apparently impressed studio executives with his performance in the upcoming Warner Bros. dysfunctional family comedy, This Is Where I Leave You, playing opposite Jason Bateman and Tina Fey.

The 6’3” Driver, a former Marine after the 9/11 attacks, has the physicality to play opposite the 6’4” Ben Affleck, a necessary characteristic for a character who recently stood in for Bruce Wayne as Batman in the comics.  While the role of Dick Grayson is no stranger to Batman film adaptations, having appeared in the original Adam West Batman film played by Burt Ward, and in the two Joel Schumacher films played by Chris O’Donnell, this will be the first time the character appears as his post-Robin identity, Nightwing.  According to the casting reports, Batman and Nightwing will have been estranged for years at the start of the new film.

As of now, take this rumor with a large grain of salt.  Casting rumors for this film are disproven almost as quickly as they go viral, with everyone believing that Justin Bieber was going to play the role of Robin at one point.  Most reports, including this one, are still identifying the film as Batman vs. Superman even though that title has not been confirmed as official.
