Handshakes Turned Awkward

We have all been stuck in that moment, between saying good-bye and walking away comes that handshake or high-five or the knuckle bumb, and if you and the other person aren't on the same page your little gesture could turn awkward real quick. So how do you avoid situations like that? You could pull a Howie Mandel and refuse physical contact, or you could go with the flow and attempt to complete the handshake,high-five etc.  So how would people react if you purposely messed up the hand shake?
