You’d hardly expect an artist responsible for frothy pop songs such as ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca,’ ‘Shake Your Bon-Bon’ and ‘She Bangs’ to be at the center of a political controversy, but that’s apparently exactly where Ricky Martin is these days.

Rumor has it that an upcoming Martin gig in Honduras may be canceled — not to mention the star’s visa is in jeopardy — because government officials disapprove of the singer’s sexual orientation.

According to The Advocate, the country’s minister of interior Africo Madrid is trying to derail Martin’s scheduled October 16 performance by “telling the media that evangelical and Catholic leaders want Martin’s visa denied in order to ‘protect the moral and ethical principles of our society.’” Madrid was also quoted as saying, “His nuclear family is not the type of family that Honduran society and laws approve of.”

Whether Madrid is successful in his efforts remains to be seen. According to the Honduran newspaper El Heraldo, government sources are saying no attempts have been made to keep Martin from entering the country or performing, so this could all blow over in the next few days, and thousands of happy Hondurans will be able to shake their bon-bons after all.
