Hopefully, Texas Vehicle Inspections Are About to End

Texas may get rid of inspections

We might have finally found some intelligence in a politician. This one wants to end our annual inspections before we can get our cars registered. Makes sense to me!

Senator Don Huffines of Dallas filed Senate Bill 1588 to make inspections a thing of the past.

Said Sen. Huffines in a press release:

With significant technological advances in vehicle design and technology, this 66-year-old program is a relic of the past. State government is wasting Texans’ time & money on the annual chore of passenger inspections when 34 other states, including populous states like California, don’t require it of their drivers. Once you realize that these inspections aren’t about safety, it’s clear that they’re simply a tax on Texans’ time and money.

Apparently, Texas is one of only 16 states that still require the inspection. Huffines’ claim is that with all of the leaps and bounds made in car technology the inspections are practically pointless these days. I personally agree. Even the federal government ended the nationwide mandate on inspections all the way back in 1976.

Besides, police can still issue citations for vehicles they see and deem to be unsafe. Essentially, the annual ritual is a bit outdated. I guess we’ll see what happens in Austin.
