Lady Gaga Comes Under Fire for ‘Princess Die’ Lyrics
Lady Gaga debuted the melancholy piano ballad ‘Princess Die‘ at the Melbourne stop of the Born This Way Ball tour, which may or may not appear on her next album. The song, whose lyrics are laced with double entendre about the late Princess Diana, who perished in a 1997 car accident in Paris, has already come under fire. Apparently, the references to suicide and to Diana are too much for some to handle.
The song’s lyrics reference taking pills and leaving a note, and the paparazzi swarming after being proposed to. Some of the words seem to be lifted from the final days of Princess Di, who died in a car accident with her boyfriend after being chased by photographers into a tunnel.
Sample lyrics: “I wish that I would go / In my rich boyfriend’s limo / Right after he proposed / With a 16-carat stone wrapped in rose gold / With the paparazzi all swarming around.” She also sings about a dead blonde. Di, of course, was a famous blonde.
Now Monsters and Critics reports that suicide organizations in Australia have criticized the song and are displeased about the message that it sends to little monsters.
Chris Wagner, communications director for Lifeline, said: “We understand artistic license and we get artistic expression, but celebrities need to recognize that they’re role models for young people in the community.”
The Daily Mail also reports that Diana fans – and there are many of those, as she was once the most beloved and photographed woman in the world — are also not happy with the song.
We will say this. Gaga is an artist and her lyrics have double meanings in them. She is also incredibly conscious about her sphere of influence on the youth and her little monsters. It is a role she does not take lightly. We also highly doubt that she meant any disrespect and that she is eulogizing Diana in the best way she knows how – through a song. Gaga is not the type to skirt controversy, either, so we don’t think she will change her song.
Oh, and speaking of skirts (sort of), Ma Monster stepped out in Melbourne wearing a padlocked collar. We guess she was in an S&M fashion mood, as she wore a thick black collar around her neck, with a gold lock and a cleavage-revealing bra.
