When you’re in court, you always hope for the best. In Florida this past week, a judge made an unusual ruling when he sentenced a man to take his wife on a date.

It started when Joseph Bray forgot his wife’s birthday. Sonja Bray was upset about it, and they got into an argument which resulted in Joseph knocking her onto a couch and putting his hands around her throat. While a man should never lay his hands on a woman in that way, the judge in the case seemed to think it wasn’t a concern and let him off easy.

His sentence is for Joseph Bray to buy his wife flowers and a birthday card, then take her to a nice dinner at Red Lobster, followed by a night of bowling. That sounds better than jail, if you ask me.

Judge Hurley has been questioned about why he ruled in such a way, and his response was this:

The court would not normally [make this ruling] if the court felt there was some violence but this is very, very minor and the court felt that that was a better resolution than the other alternatives.

There’s no word on what either of the Bray’s think about the matter, but if it took a judge to get my husband to take me out for my birthday, I think I’d still be upset. Let’s hope he has more planned than only what the judge ordered.
