‘Minions’ Trailer: Doesn’t It Feel So Good to Be Bad?

A ‘Minions’ movie shouldn’t work. They were undoubtedly the best part of the ‘Despicable Me’ movies, and a very large part of why those films were successful, but could they actually support their own movie? That would be like giving Kramer his own ‘Seinfeld’ spinoff. Yet, watching this new ‘Minions’ trailer has us totally hooked. This could actually work.

At least in the short bursts we’ve seen so far of this movie, the Minions are bringing their A-game. Now, perhaps that’s because these short clips and trailers are broken into bite size chunks, and we haven’t gotten a chance to get sick of them yet. But, there’s something oddly charming about following a bunch of characters that don’t speak any English (or, any recognizable language for that matter) for an entire movie. We actually laughed!

Joining them—because every Minion needs their supervillain—is Sandra Bullock‘s Scarlett Overkill. The question is whether she’s really looking out for their best interests, or has other nefarious plans for the little yellow dudes.

Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

Joining Bullock in the film are Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Alison Janney and Steve Coogan.

‘Minions’ opens in theaters on July 10.
