No Walmart Neighborhood Market For Wichita Falls
Walmart has confirmed that it will not be following through with plans to bring a Neighborhood Market store to Wichita Falls.
Originally planned for the corner of Southwest Parkway and Barnett just north of Memorial Stadium, the 41,000-square-foot store would have brought nearly 100 new jobs to the area, providing consumers with a pharmacy, deli, bakery, produce, groceries, and grab-and-go meals.
The city even passed an ordinance in December to allow the store to sell alcohol within 300 feet of WFISD property.
Walmart's director of communications Anne Hatfield said that while they will continue to expand in Texas, the decision to not build in Wichita Falls was made within the past few weeks,
After careful consideration, we have made a business decision not to pursue our plans to build a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Wichita Falls. However our commitment to our customers has not changed.
We will continue to pursue the opportunity to provide our customers throughout the area for a convenient and affordable shopping experience that our stores have to offer.
According to TRN, City Manager Darron Leiker expressed his disappointment at the decision, noting the concessions the city made for the company, especially the ordinance for alcohol sales, which was called a one-time decision saying,
It was kind of a surprise to everybody because we'd been working with them for months and that issue with the alcohol waiver went before council and was approved. At that point we thought it was kind of a done deal.
