A routine welfare check turned into a homicide case.

Ashley Nicole Blades was at home in Weatherford, Texas last year. A routine welfare check came about because Ashley texted her baby's father. The text message Ashley sent said she had given birth and that the baby was dead.

When police arrived, Blades told officers that the baby was in the trunk of her car and gave them the keys. The dead infant was found wrapped with a towel inside a plastic bag, police said.

Blades later admitted to police to putting the hours-old baby in the trunk. She told detectives she had covered the infant's nose and mouth "for a minute or two" to keep her quiet, police said.

Ashley Nicole Blades was sentenced to thirty years in prison. She will not be eligible for parole until she serves at least half of that sentence.
