Rihanna is usually and almost notoriously private about her personal life, but she opened up to interviewer Kate Garraway in a sitdown to promote her new movie, ‘Battleship,’ in the U.K.

On her action packed role as a tough girl in ‘Battleship,’ as opposed to her token sexpot persona, RiRi admitted she got nervous, but that her director, Peter Berg, helped her move past her fears. “It was nerve wracking — really scary — to go into something so new not really knowing what to expect or what to do,” she revealed. “It was a learning experience. Peter Berg was really, really good at helping with that, he didn’t even give me a chance to think about it before I was saying lines on the first day … and that helped to cut to the chase. I get nervous,” she said. “I get that anxiety just before I’m about to do something big or when everyone’s going to be looking at me.” Could’ve fooled us with all that cool girl swag — esp in the below photo in which Rihanna posed in front of her movie poster!

Part of what drives Rihanna to move past her anxiety is her own motivation, but that sometimes it can backfire when she doesn’t have time to collect herself and just be. “I’m very competitive with myself, I don’t like staying in the same place,” Rihanna said. “I like growth. I want to get better, the next step always has to be upward, or forward. I’m relentless in that way when it comes to my work,” she continued. “I feel guilty stopping for a little bit, but sometimes it’s good to stop. I noticed that this year when I actually had time to stop in January because that was the first time I really took time off for myself.”

Rihanna also dishes on her body confidence in the interview. It’s always surprising to learn that she has insecurities considering how scantily clad she often is, but she’s human — and she previously revealed that showing skin helps her get past her hangups. “I don’t think anyone really is 100% [confident],” Rihanna said. “I mean, you get comfortable with the fact that that’s your body and it is what it is,” she explained. “That I had to learn, doing enough topless shoots with GQ and Esquire. You just have to accept your body. You may not love it all the way, but you just have to be comfortable with it. You just want something else that someone else has, but that doesn’t mean what you have isn’t beautiful. No one is every 100% ‘I’m the bomb.com’ from head to toe.” True, but if anyone could be, it should probably be RiRi!

Rihanna shared that her Bajan heritage and biracial background are parts of what makes her who she is and why she can be so accepting of herself. “A lot of the reason why I am the way that I am and my character has a lot to do with my culture,” Rihanna said. “It really helped to have a thick skin coming from Barbados. I definitely had to learn fast how to ignore things or not let it bother me,” she revealed. “From the time I was very young, I was teased about being biracial. That was one of the first things I dealt with, then it went on throughout high school. If it wasn’t one thing it was the other thing. In my home, a lot of the things I saw helped prepare me for this world.”
