Robert Pattinson knows romance. And, apparently, writing utensils. So, naturally, he gave girlfriend Kristen Stewart a really expensive pen for her 23rd birthday on April 9.

The Daily Star reports that the 26-year-old 'Twilight' actor dropped about 40 large on the fountain pen, which -- despite being more sparkly than a vampire at high noon -- has no magical properties.

“Kristen has always collected pens, and has a variety of stylish ones. Rob decided to go big for her birthday this year and brought her a limited edition white gold Tibaldi Bentley Crewe fountain pen," a source told the paper.

R-Patz allegedly wanted something tied to British history, and the pen celebrates iconic UK car maker Bentley Motors' 60th year in business.

There are only 40 of the pens in the world, and they have "a two-tone 18-carat yellow gold nib covered in rhodium and ruthenium," plus the barrel is "identical to Bentley’s dashboard used in their earliest car." Uh, neat.

Rob also engraved it with the words "From R," which should distinguish it from all those other $40,000 pens Kristen has.

It wasn't her only gift, either -- supposedly Rob finally asked her to move back in with him, proving maybe he's finally ready to forgive her transgression with the guy who directed that 'Snow White' movie you've probably forgotten about already.

"They’ve been taking it slowly," friends say, "but Kristen has gradually won back [Rob's] trust."
