Scientists have known for years that dolphins behave like humans in many different ways, but now a BBC One documentary called “Spy in the Pod” is showing us something else they like to do – get stoned.

Younger dolphins seem to have discovered that puffer fish can produce a narcotic-like effect in small doses. The fish can be toxic, so the dolphin will gently chew on the fish, get just a bit of the toxin, then pass the fish on to the next dolphin.

Afterward they’ve shown strange behavior, such as hanging out at the surface of the water as though they’re fascinated by their own reflection.

If you get BBC One, “Spy in the Pod” airs on Thursday, January 2.
