When naming the cinematic failures of the year, what do you take into account? Box Office performance or critical response? Here, we're looking at both.

First, critical response. While a lot of people discount what critics have to say, its hard to deny that when a lot of critics bash a movie, there's something very wrong with it. Business Insider compiled the 25 films of the year with the worst critical responses according to their Metacritic score (positive reviews out of 100),

  1. 'Nine Lives' - 11/100
  2. 'Mother's Day' - 18/100
  3. 'Dirty Grandpa' - 18/100
  4. 'Norm of the North' - 21/100
  5. 'Max Steel' - 22/100
  6. 'Search Party' - 22/100
  7. 'Yoga Hosers' - 23/100
  8. 'Sea of Trees' - 23/100
  9. 'Gods of Egypt' - 25/100
  10. 'Man Down' - 26/100
  11. 'The Choice' - 26/100
  12. 'Nina' - 27/100
  13. 'When the Bough Breaks' - 28/100
  14. 'London Has Fallen' - 28/100
  15. 'Fifty Shades of Black' - 28/100
  16. 'Boo! A Madea Halloween' - 30/100
  17. 'Get a Job' - 31/100
  18. 'Warcraft' - 32/100
  19. 'Ride Along 2' - 32/100
  20. 'Independence Day: Resurgence' - 32/100
  21. 'The Divergent Series: Allegiant' - 32/100
  22. 'The 5th Wave' - 33/100
  23. 'Zoolander 2' - 34/100
  24. 'Ice Age: Collision Course' - 34/100
  25. 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' - 34/100

Like we said earlier, audiences can be quick to discount critical response, especially if its a movie they enjoy or a franchise they feel loyalty to. But studios will promote critical acclaim to divert attention from other negative responses and aspects. Take 'Ghostbusters: Answer the Call' for example. The critical acclaim was good enough to warrant a "Certified Fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes, but the film did receive a lot of fan backlash (before and after release) and failed to perform up to expectations at the box office, turning a respectable profit but failing to meet studio goals, never claiming the #1 spot, and quickly dropping out of the Top 10. But when the movie was released on home media, that "Certified Fresh" logo was seen everywhere you saw promotional material, trying so hard to remind audiences of the positives.

It is hard to ignore the box office performance, be it films that lost money or failed to hit projected profits for a film of its size and hype.
