Criminals never seem to rest and those committing financial crimes are no exception.  The Wichita Falls Police Department sent out a warning earlier this evening about a rash of mail thefts.  The thieves are targeting residential mailboxes looking for checks.

Even today, a surprising number of folks still pay bills the old fashioned way: check via snail mail.  But be warned, you could become the latest victim of this age-old scam.  Putting the check in the mail at home has never been the most secure way to pay.  The thieves will steal the checks you’re attempting to mail, alter them and cash them out.  We don’t know exactly how many people have fallen victim of this latest round of check thefts, but police say the list is growing and the losses are significant.

The safest thing to do is drop your checks into a secure mailbox or drop them off at one the local post office satellite stations or at the main post office downtown on Lamar.  All of these locations will have a secure drive-up box.  If you suspect you may have been a victim of a check theft, you should contact the Wichita Falls Police Department at 761-7792 and also notify your financial institution so that they can be on the lookout for suspicious activity related to your account.
