Winter Activities In Wichita Falls
It's during the winter I feel the most content. Nature stands still for a few months and allows for contemplation and reflection. Peaceful moments are easier to find in walks around the neighborhood as the busyness of the city seems to taper under the first blanket of snow. Winter is the only time of year that comfort food appears to abide without guilt in every kitchen, bringing warmth to the body and spirit. And only in the winter are you allowed to have longer, leisurely stretches to savor belonging to yourself and your family inside the warmth of your home.
Complimenting the season with an occasional outing puts the icing on the cake, but finding something to do can be challenging. To make things a little easier I compiled a list of winter activities available here in the Falls.
Dec 7- Jan 1: - MSU-Burns Fantasy of Lights is open to the public at no cost, and is one of the largest holiday displays of its kind. Its purpose is to provide a festive holiday atmosphere on campus, to serve as an outreach to the community, and to be a focal point for holiday activities in North Texas. The displays are owned and operated by Midwestern State University for the benefit and enjoyment of the Wichita Falls community and surrounding area. The Fantasy of Lights is filled with individual displays that showcase themes or characters from well-known children’s stories, fairy tales, and holiday themes. Hours are from dusk until 10pm
Messiah Presentation
Dec. 16: First Presbyterian Church's will present the sixty-seventh annual performance of " Handel's Messiah," at 3:30 p.m.
Historic 20th-century Christmas
Dec. 22nd: Enjoy the magic of an early 20th-century Christmas at the historic Kell House Museum as all the lights are turned down. A guide will use a single candle to lead visitors throughout the museum, where you can enjoy walking through halls filled with the rich history of Frank Kell and Joseph Kemp. Live Nativity
Dec 22nd: If your in the mood for a drive to Electra the First United Methodist Church is having a Live Nativity outdoors.They will have live animals and Hot chocolate, and advise to bring a lawn chair to sit and enjoy the story of Jesus Christ. Address is 1107 S Bailey Electra Texas - the show will begin at 6pm
Dec 14-15th, 21-22nd: at River Bend Nature Center will have a lighted Christmas display to view. Presale tickets are on sale in the River Bend Nature Gift Shop! You can purchase a presale packet, which contains a presale ticket, a food ticket (good for one s'more or popcorn), and a drink ticket (good for one hot cocoa or hot cider) for $5.00. Or you can purchase an individual presale ticket for $4.00 Hours are 6:30-8:30pm
Hockey
Jan 4-5th: The Wichita Falls Wildcats vs. Topeka Roadrunners, 7:05 p.m., Kay Yeager Coliseum. $12 and $15. 716-5555. Jan 26-27th: Wichita Falls will also be hosting a gun and knife show at the MPEC in the Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall - Hall B - Entry fee is $5.00 Adults, Children 13 & under are FREE. More details on the event can be found online here.
Jan. 31: Grupo Fantasma, 7 p.m., Akin Auditorium, MSU campus. You might recognize the band's music from television placements in AMC's "Breaking Bad," Showtime's "Weeds," ABC's "Ugly Betty," NBC's "Law and Order" or John Sayles' film, "Casa de los Baby's"; however, this 10-piece musical collective from Austin has been praised as one of the most important independent acts in the Latin genre. $20 and $18 (free for MSU students/faculty/staff with I.D.) 397-4291.
Roller Derby Games
Don't forget about your Wichita Falls Derby Dames or the Red River Roller Derby Girls here in Wichita Falls. These derby sisters are participating in a fast-growing sport that is becoming very popular among women aiming to keep the excitement and fun in their busy lives.
