After I listened to a friend complain about the condition of the roads & how the city isn't doing anything, I felt the urge to a) put some duct tape over her mouth and b) defend our city employees who have worked around the clock all week long.

For GOD'S SAKE, how many times in the last 10 years have we needed a snow plow?!  I've been here 11 and I can remember two times I've had to break out the snow boots & ice scrapper.  TWO!

For  the type of weather we "typically" have here in north Texas, we just don't have the equipment or the money to have a bazillion snow plows sitting in storage ready to go at a moments notice.

Wichita Falls simply doesn't have enough equipment to clean up a city that was iced down and snowed over and held captive in frozen temperatures for days, according to Larry Krugle, street superintendent for the city of Wichita Falls.

"You apologize and make excuses, " Krugle said Friday when asked about his busy week.  "But in your heart, you have to know you've done the best you can with what you've had available.  I have no problem saying that."

Wichita Falls is a frugal city, and there has never been support for purchasing snow plows that will be used only once every few years, Krugle said.

I was shocked to discover WHO'S in charge of clearing Kell, Southwest Pkwy and other major roadways.  Find out how the Super Bowl is slowing down the progress at Times Record News.

So if you'd like to start a Snow Plow Fund, feel free to post the info here so we can jump on board & contribute.  May it be used every winter.
