I would put this on our welcome sign into town. "This city's baseball team once beat Babe Ruth".

Growing up a Baltimore Orioles fan, I have hated everything to do with the New York Yankees my entire life. However, since Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland we have a statue outside of our stadium honoring him which just pisses off Yankees fans.

The legend of Babe Ruth has only grown over the years. The Sandlot said it best, "Babe Ruth is the greatest baseball player that ever lived. People say he was less than a god but more than a man. You know, like Hercules or something."

Did you know, the legendary baseball player once played right here in Wichita Falls, Texas?

The New York Yankees in Wichita Falls

I have argued the coolest thing in Wichita Falls history is the Dallas Cowboys holding training camp here back in the day. As a Cowboys fan, I think that's pretty sweet. Maybe for sports historians hosting the New York Yankees during their peak years is probably bigger.

The 1927 New York Yankees are considered one of the greatest baseball lineups of all time, hence the nickname 'Murder's Row'. Many of those same players were still on the team in 1930. Including Earle Combs, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth. Apparently the Yankees had an exhibition game, right here in Wichita Falls before the 1930 season.

April 3rd, 1930 Spudder Park

The New York Yankees VS the Wichita Falls Spudders. Yes, this really happened back in the day. New York Times article proves it and everything. In what sounds like some sort of miracle, the Spudders beat the New York Yankees. I need to repeat that, the Wichita Falls Spudders beat BABE RUTH'S NEW YORK YANKEES. HOW?!

Well it looks like New York Yankees pitcher Roy Sherid got destroyed in the fourth inning, giving up seven hits and seven runs. The Great Bambino would hit two home runs on the day, but it wasn't enough for the Yankees. As they would lose 9-6 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

In not shocking news, this game was a sellout in Spudder Park. In the third inning, they apparently started selling standing row tickets because so many people were trying to get in. I can't imagine the chaos this caused in the city trying to get a glimpse of one of the greatest baseball players of all time in our city.

So remember when one of those A-hole Yankees fans starts talking about 27 rings, you can tell them at least my team never lost to the Wichita Falls Spudders.

Remember Wichita Falls Baseball Team, The Spudders?

The Wichita Falls Spudders were a minor league team that operated right here in Wichita Falls, Texas for decades. We decided to take a look back on some old school moments from our former team here.
