Harrison Ford Stars Alongside CGI Dog in ‘The Call of the Wild’
Cats and hedgehogs aren't the only ones to receive the CGI treatment this year. A new trailer for 20th Century Fox's The Call of the Wild present Harrison Ford alongside a computer-animated canine co-star. The movie is an adaptation of the adventure novel of the same name by Jack London, though it's certainly not the first (that would be the 1923 silent film). Based on the trailer, it seems pretty epic:
2020's The Call of the Wild will feature a live-action human cast, rounded out by Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, and Colin Woodell. But despite that, the trailer suggests that this is going to feel like a family-friendly animated movie rather than a gritty tale of survival. It's not necessarily the use of CGI that does it — The Revenant's CGI bear was pretty convincing. Instead, something about the dog looks just a hair too cartoonish. You almost expect it to start talking, like Scooby-Doo in his live-action movie. After all, director Chris Sanders is most known for animated pictures such as How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods. But whether or not you've heard his name before, you've definitely heard him — he voiced the role of Stitch in Lilo and Stitch, which he also co-directed.
The Call of the Wild releases in U.S. theaters on February 21, 2020.
