15 Celebs Come Together on Twitter for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech
Today, 15 high-profile celebrities -- including Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Kerry Washington, Lady Gaga, Diddy, and Pharrell -- came together to each tweet a different line from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Each celebrity shared their respective line from the speech around noon ET and with the hashtag #IHaveADream. Twitter created a special emoji icon to commemorate the federal U.S. holiday, which is traditionally celebrated on the third Monday every January.
King was a key figure in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 28, 1963. He stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial and gave the emotional speech to a crowd of 250,000 supporters. The speech is widely regarded as one of the turning points in the Civil Rights Movement and continues to be used as a symbol for freedom, equality, and human rights today.
