WARNING: VIDEO BELOW OF MAN DROWNING
Since 2006, the CrossFit Games has been an annual competition trying to find the fittest people in the world. For the first time ever, it was held in Texas this week after previously being held in California and Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the CrossFit games are making national headlines after a competitor died while competing yesterday.
Statement from CrossFit Games
During the first event which was dubbed "Lake Day". This event consisted of a 3.5-mile run, then a 800-meter swim. A 28-year-old competitor from Serbia named Lazar Dukic was finishing the 800 meter swim. Towards the finish line, he suddenly stops swimming and disappears under the water. CrossFit does have folks watching in boats in the water, but it doesn't appear anyone noticed Lazar go under. One man watching the event from the shore noticed Lazar disappear and jumped in the water to rescue him.
TRIGGER WARNING FOR MAN DROWNING BELOW
Many are criticizing the CrossFit games in the order that they do their events. As mentioned above it was an 3.5 mile run, then the 800 meter swim. Your typical triathlon event always has swimming first, then biking, then running. That way if someone can't finish the last of the events, they collapse on the side of the road and not in a lake. We will see if CrossFit plans to make changes to this event in the future.
The incident happened at Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth. Lazar's body was pulled from the lake about an hour after the incident. As of right now, the CrossFit games are still scheduled to go on. Many are calling for a cancellation of the rest of the events that are scheduled to go on until Sunday.
