It has been rumored for awhile now, but the WFISD School Board made it official at their meeting on Monday.

Big changes will be coming to some schools in Wichita Falls and the big one is that Jefferson Elementary school will officially be closing after the spring semester of 2026. KFDX is reporting that the closing of this school had been previously recommended, but became official after last night's school board meeting.

Where Will Students at Jefferson Elementary Attend School at Now?

Looks like any students that would have been attending Jefferson Elementary in the fall of 2026 will be going to three different school options. West Foundation Elementary School, Fowler Elementary School, or the remodeled McNeil Elementary School (formerly McNeil Middle School).

McNeil Elementary School on Track for Opening in Fall of 2026

At last night's school board meeting, WFISD Superintendent Dr. Donny Lee said that construction is on track and everything is coming along nicely. Including a state of the art STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Center. This will be the highlight of the new McNeil Elementary. Each grade will have their own hub in the new elementary school.

The best part right now is that they're currently under budget on the construction project and everything is on track. Once the school year concludes for Jefferson Elementary, some items will be moved over to McNeil. Dr. Lee does say McNeil will be getting brand new classroom equipment, so not everything needs to be moved over.
