Occasionally you have a water delay in the NBA. This is due to too much sweat being built up on the court by the players or a fan spilling a drink. Usually this taken care of in a matter of minutes. Imagine though you go to a NBA game and you leave soaked like Shamu just came splashing down at Sea World. That's what happened to some San Antonio Spurs fans on this date in 1994.
Water Cannon Goes Off at The Alamodome
I know the video above says 1995, but the actual date of the game is November 4th, 1994. This is the home opener for the San Antonio Spurs as they were taking on the Golden State Warriors at their old venue, The Alamodome. Why on Earth would a massive water hose start suddenly spraying hundreds of fans below.
Pyrotechnics Trigger Fire System
Sadly, no video has ever come out from the San Antonio Spurs pregame entrance that night. Apparently pyrotechnics is the culprit. However, The Alamadome in 1994 didn't just have the standard roof sprinklers we're used to seeing. They essentially have the equivalent of a fire hose that once triggered by fire, just starts shooting gallons of water onto the court. It took quite sometime to get it to shut off. They say around 2,500 gallons was dumped before they got it to stop.
Spurs Documentary On This Infamous Night
Last year, the Spurs dropped a documentary on the fifty years of their franchise and Episode 3 featured the water cannon night. You can get more from the crew that worked in the arena on that day at about five minutes and thirty seconds into the video above.
