Are you among the Texans who feel like tipping is out of control these days? I’m not going to sugar coat it – I think it has gotten downright absurd. It seems like I’m asked to leave a tip damn near every time I make a purchase.

I remember when waitstaff, delivery drivers, hair stylists, bartenders, and tattoo artists were the only people you were expected to tip. Nowadays, every time someone at a checkout counter spins their screen around, there’s a tip prompt waiting for me. It’s insane.

The thing is, I’ve worked a checkout counter many times in my life and never felt like I needed to be tipped for it. Taking someone's order, fixing their drinks, and letting them know when their food was ready was what my salary was for. No tip was necessary.

Now, I need to make it clear that I don’t believe the servers are to blame. In fact, my best guess is that they think tipping has gotten ridiculous, too. I believe it’s a method used by businesses that don’t pay their employees what they’re worth and pass the rest along to customers.

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, let’s get to the results of a recent tipping survey conducted by WalletHub. It’s good to know a vast number of Americans agree with me. Almost 90% of respondents said that tipping had gotten out of control.

So, maybe it’s time for businesses to just pay people what they’re worth and not expect hard-working Americans to foot the bill for them.
