Patricia Richardson Refutes Tim Allen’s Claims About a ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot
Patricia Richardson is setting the story straight about a possible Home Improvement reboot.
It's not happening, she says — at least not with her involvement.
The actress, who played Jill Taylor on the 1990s sitcom, says not only does she not want to do a reunion, she also doesn't believe it would work given all the changes the cast has been through over the years.
"I would not want to," she tells the Back to the Best Podcast.
"Zach [Ty Bryan] is now a felon. Taran [Noah Smith] hasn't acted since he left the show — he's not an actor anymore. And Jonathan's not really interested in acting," she explains. "He wants to direct and write. And we don't have Wilson. If they do it without Earl [Hindman] and then we only have two kids, if that, it's not gonna be the same show at all."
"People think we can just magically go right back to who we were 30 years ago and do a show that's 30 years ago and we've all changed quite a bit, I think, since then," she continues. "The show, it would just be very weird."
Ultimately, Richardson is happy with the show the way it is — as a one-and-done.
"I think we did it. We did it well. We quit at the right time before it got really bad," she explains. "And it should just stay like it is and not be a half a-- version of it."
Did Tim Allen Promise a Home Improvement Reboot?
In November 2023, Tim Allen talked about the possibility of a Home Improvement reboot and even made it sound like he had talked to the cast.
"We keep talking about it," the actor, who played Richardson's onscreen husband, Tim Taylor, said in an interview with the Messenger.
Perhaps the "we" he is referring to is not the cast, but the crew or maybe just Richard Karn, who played Al Borland, whom he says he keeps in touch with.
Allen also said ideas for a reboot have been tossed out there.
"It's funny, one of the conversations we've had recently is how weird it would be if Home Improvement would be about their kids' kids," he said. "Like if all of them had children, and then I'm a grandparent. Home Re-Improvement or something like that. It's come up."

According to Richardson, conversations about a reboot have never come up.
"It was so weird. I would hear on Twitter or whatever, I would hear he was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about how everyone was on board to do a Home Improvement reunion, but he never asked me and he never asked Jonathan [Taylor Thomas]," she tells the podcast.
She even took to social media to refute Allen's claims.
