Summer Movie Preview 2024: The 12 Films You Need to See

For most of us, summer means beautiful weather, high temperatures, and long, sunny days. It’s a great time of year to hang out outside, but it’s also the perfect time to see what’s playing at the movie theater. Summer blockbuster season is almost upon us, and with it comes this most fun you’ll have at the movies all year. This year promises one of the best seasons yet.

To celebrate, we’ve chosen 12 of the biggest releases of the summer for you to mark your calendars for this year, from horseback-riding apes and truck driving storm chasers to animated personified feelings and wisecracking superheroes. So many of these movies are sequels—nine out of the twelve on this list—and though we love to support original stories we can’t help but be massively excited to return to worlds we know and love. That said, there’s some really exciting new stuff cooking for later in the year, including a spooky serial killer thriller and a drama about a gang of bikers that already has the film festival crowd revving their engines.

Some of these, like a prequel to a certain beloved desert-set post-apocalyptic adventure starring souped-up semi trucks, are movies we’ve been waiting for for years since they were first announced. Others are welcome surprises or, in one case, the culmination of a surprise trilogy. There’s so much to be excited for this summer, and so many movies you’ll be hitting up the multiplex almost every week. Let’s dive in.
