Josh Brolin Confirms He Was Considered For Batman, Supports Affleck
Affirming fan speculation, “Old Boy” and “Men in Black 3” star Josh Brolin admitted that he was an official contender for the role of Batman in the upcoming Superman/Batman film, and also expressed his support for the new Batman, Ben Affleck.
Last night at the premiere for his film “Labor Day”, Brolin confirmed that his reps were in talks with director Zack Snyder for Brolin take the role of the caped crusader,
"We did. I didn't have conversations about it, but Zack, that was part of his idea. It just didn't turn out. It's OK. It is OK. You know, another scenario might have worked better, but I'm happy for Ben.”
Brolin wasn’t the only actor to be rumored for the role that eventually went to Ben Affleck, but he’s the first to admit that he was in contention. Brolin has already appeared as a DC Comics character; playing the title character in the box-office bomb, “Jonah Hex”, a film that even Brolin himself admitted was terrible. While many, me included, feel that Brolin would have been a better choice for the next Dark Knight, Brolin has remained upbeat about missing out on the role, even defending Affleck from the epic backlash at the announcement of his casting,
"I've never seen such a global reaction in my life," Brolin said. "I feel for him, truly. I would not want to be him right now. The reaction becomes so personal. Its like, 'F*** this guy, I wish he was dead.' And you're like, 'What? Dude, seriously? This guy is just working like you are. He's doing the same thing you are. He's trying to make the best choices he can.'"
Other actors rumored for the role of Batman included Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale (even though Bale repeatedly said he didn’t want the part and Christopher Nolan said his Batman films were not in the same fictional universe as Superman), “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello (who was also rumored for Superman in “Man of Steel”), and “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Hoechlin.
To me, Brolin is a far more accomplished actor than Ben Affleck. Though Affleck is good in his own right and has had some decent films, Brolin has proven himself to be an actor that can bury himself into a character that’s unlike him, something Affleck isn’t known to do. I really enjoyed “Man of Steel”, though a lot of die-hard Superman fans did not, so all I can do is sit back and hope Zack Snyder knows what he’s doing here. What else can I do? Sign a petition to have the role recast?
