A recent story from KAUZ has created some confusion in Wichita Falls about where their donations are actually going after being dropped in those blue or pink bins. It was reported that many of these bins for donating clothes, shoes, toys and more were actually going to for profit companies in areas like Houston, Dallas, and Amarillo. They were then sold for profit to third world countries or used to make insulation.

One thing noted is that if the local bin is ran by Goodwill or the Salvation Army, then it is going to local donations. It was also pointed out that local bins ran by the Dallas company World Wear Project would have a D.A.R.E. sticker on them and do help locally. According to KAUZ, though the local bins reported on the World Wear Project website were not found on a local search.

The WFPD and the D.A.R.E. program have put up their own site to clarify the information. They say that even though the items are sent to Dallas, the World Wear Project donates $50 per month per bin to the local Wichita Falls D.A.R.E. program. These funds are much needed and help to to purchase much needed supplies for the program and the classroom.

The WFPD wants to make sure you know which bins are the ones that will help locally, and that you don't let the other, for-profit bins keep you from donating. There are currently 13 local donation bins that support the D.A.R.E. program. They are located at:

Wal-Mart – 3130 Lawrence Road – 2 bins
Sutherland’s – 1401 Southwest Pkwy – 1 bin
Family YMCA – 5001 Bartley Dr – 1 bin
Berend Bros – 4311 Jacksboro Hwy – 1 bin
Wal-Mart – 5131 Greenbriar – 2 bins
Walgreens – 4600 Kell West – 1 bin
Freedom Estates – 505 Nehls – 1 bin
Dr. Harris Chiropractic – 4217 Fairwaiy Blvd – 4 bins

Be aware of false donation bins, but don't let that deter you from making your donations. Not only are you helping people in third world countries, but the monetary donations from the World Wear Project are very useful for the D.A.R.E. program right here in Wichita Falls.
