Poor R. Kelly. The R&B singer was participating in an #AskRKelly chat on Twitter in support of his new album 'Black Panties' but things went off the rails...and quick.

It was a complete and total disaster that devolved into a torrent of insults and mean questions from the Twitterverse, many of which referenced his past sexual indiscretions with much-younger participants, according to The Boombox.

We'd like to mention that Kelly's marketing team may find itself minus a few people for allowing this mess to happen or for not putting a tighter restriction on the questions. But even putting limits and boundaries on the queries might not have stopped this thing from taking on a life of its own.

We'd also like to point out that the people who asked the mean questions got in the way of fans with legit questions. While we don't condone R.'s past mistakes, it's so easy to be a keyboard ninja and to hide behind a Twitter handle and fire off insults when you can't do it to someone's face. It was like the R. edition of Mean Tweets from 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

It's something to chew on, since Twitter, when used for good, is meant to foster communication between artists and fans.

Below is a sampling of the tweets.

Some are sorta funny. Others are mean.
