What is ‘Fat Tuesday?’ [VIDEO]
Mardi Gras is coming to an end tonight at midnight, and today is known by the names Fat Tuesday (the literal translation of “Mardi Gras”), Pancake Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, and the last day of Carnival. What does it all mean?
Tomorrow is the first day of Lent, so today is a day to fatten up and feast prior to abstaining from certain treats during the season of Lent. Because of this, many people eat, drink, and celebrate in the weeks leading up to Lent, culminating in the final celebration that is Fat Tuesday.
Contrary to popular belief (and the video posted below), Mardi Gras did NOT originate in New Orleans, but in Mobile, Alabama. It is, however, a hugely popular celebration in New Orleans and the parades and fanfare that come with the territory are synonymous with the Louisiana city.
