Scroll Down to Check Out the 92.9 NIN Picks for Summer Reading

Before I was working at the radio station, one of my first jobs was volunteering for the summer reading program back in Maryland at the local library. I saw that our Wichita Falls Public Library downtown was getting ready to start theirs and I reached out to see if I could help get the word out. I asked everyone at the station to participate and you can see some of our picks at the library when you visit.

  1. 'The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carl' This was the first book I remember reading as a kid with my parents. They would read it to me all the time and it showed all the different insects that I loved as a kid. The ending of the book actually made a cricket chirp sound and as a little kid I looked forward to that sound each and every story time.
  1. Goosebumps: A Shocker on Shock Street by R.L. Stine' 'Being a kid of the 90's, Goosebumps books were extremely popular. I had several of these throughout my childhood, but my absolute favorite was 'A Shocker on Shock Street' where a theme park gets overrun with old horror movie characters. Picking one Goosebumps book is tough, but I re-read this one more than any other in the series.
  1. 'Animorphs: The Change' by K.A. Applegate No book series got me more excited to read than Animorphs. Where every book was set in the same universe, but was written from the perspective of a different kid in the friend group. They had the ability to morph into different animals and this book is number 13 in the series. No spoilers, but Tobias had gone through a lot in the previous books and this book goes through a lot of what he was dealing with. If any kid is looking for a series to start, this had me hooked back in the day. Obviously start with the first book 'The Invasion' and work your way towards this one.

'Holes by Louis Sachar' was one of my favorites as a kid. It has so much packed into it --mystery, love, adventure, and even a little humor. The characters were misfits, which is very much how I felt as a kid.I loved how the book focused on real-world problems, but still sprinkled in some magic and fantasy. There are parts that involve a family curse, a buried treasure, friendship, and survival. This book is a hard one to put down. It also has a movie, which is like "book dessert."

'Guess Again! by Mac Barnett' When my daughter was in elementary school, one of my favorite books to read to her and to her classroom was Guess Again! by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Adam Rex. The author poses a question in rhyme leading children to give the obvious, logical answer, but it’s never what you think. And just when you think you’ve figured it out, guess again! This book truly makes me laugh out loud every time I read it.

'The Giver by Louis Lowry' I remember this being one of the first books that I wanted to keep reading. It had this cool mystery aspect to it. It was futuristic… I read it when I was about 12 or 13 and I remember feeling actual emotions. Jonas, the main character, was about my age and I really felt a connection with him. It made me feel validated in a way :) I actually want to read it as an adult again and see if I have those same feelings.

'Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain' Not sure what age I was when I read Huckleberry Finn but I remember that it was the story of a young white kid who befriended Jim, a slave. They were a VERY odd pairing considering the times that they were living in. I do remember they had lots of adventures down the Mississippi River. Racism and friendship that went beyond the color of their skin!

'Ghosts Don’t Eat Potato Chips by Marcia Jones & Debbie Dadey' I never liked to read. It always felt like a struggle to sound out the words and at the same time understand what was going on in the story until I found this book, “Ghosts Don’t Eat Potato Chips”. The words were easier to follow and made reading fun for me! This book series is about four friends that solve cool mysteries and there’s a lot of them like “Aliens Don’t Wear Braces” and “Santa Clause Doesn’t Mop Floors”. They deal with werewolves, dragons and wizards too! “Ghosts Don’t Eat Potato Chips” is my favorite children’s book because it helped me discover a love for reading and I hope it does for you too!

'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares' When I was growing up, this book became a staple with me and my friends! It's a story about 4 best girl friends, who find a pair of jeans that magically fits all of them, so during their first summer apart, we get the stories of how each girl spent her summer while wearing the jeans! It's sweet, fun, and a great book about friendship! It later became a movie, so it's always fun to read the book first and then watch the movie!
