UPDATE 6/15/17

The Clay County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the body found in a shed behind a church in Petrolia was in fact that of a missing Clay County teen.  The sheriff's office issued the following statement:

On June 13, 2017, a deceased person was found in a shed behind First Baptist Church in Petrolia, Texas. That person was positively identified as Brice Shane Coates after an autopsy was performed today. There were no signs of foul play in his death. The cause of death is pending at this time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brice Coates friends and family.

Clay County Sheriff's officials have told News Talk 1290 that they have not identified the body. As was originally reported, a visual ID was not possible due to the condition of the remains.

A sheriff official tells us that information provided to another media outlet about the body being that of missing 18-year-old Brice Coates is coming from the family of a missing Clay County teenager and not officially through their office.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Clay County Sheriff's Office reports that a body was discovered in an abandoned shed in the 200 block of Belmont Street in Petrolia.

Officials recovered the remains of a white male, believed to be in his mid to late teens, at around 1 pm Tuesday. Positive identification was not possible due to the condition of the body, so the remains have been sent for autopsy.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. We will bring you more information when available.
