Sad news to report to 'American Idol' fans, as Season 7 contestant Michael Johns died yesterday, Aug. 1. He was 35 years old.

TMZ reports that preliminary findings indicate that he died from a blood clot in the ankle. A rep for the singer confirmed the news of his death to a fan Twitter account dedicated to Johns.

Johns made it to the final eight in Season 7 of 'American Idol' in 2008 before being eliminated. David Cook and David Archuleta ended up being the final two contestants that year.

The Australian singer continued to make music after his 'Idol' career, and had modest success with his single, 'Heart on My Sleeve.' The song reached the charts at adult contemporary radio stations in the U.S.

Johns leaves behind his wife, Stacey Vuduris. The two married in 2007.

We wish Johns' family, friends and fans our condolences during this difficult time.
