Bong Joon-ho Wins the Marvel Cinema Argument, Hands Down
After Avengers: Endgame directors the Russo Brothers clapped back against Martin Scorsese's belittling comments on Marvel movies, we thought the argument of whether or not superhero movies should be considered cinema was laid to rest. After all, no one wants to beat a dead Tony Stark horse. But alas, it was resurrected from the dead by none other than Korean film director Bong Joon-ho in a recent interview with Variety. When asked about his opinions on the matter:
"I have so much respect for Scorsese and Coppola, and I grew up studying their films. So I fully understand the context of their comments and I respect their opinion. But on the other hand, if I look at the films individually, I enjoyed 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' James Mangold’s “Logan” and 'Winter Soldier' by the Russo Brothers. There are great cinematic moments in those films."
Leave it to Bong Joon-ho to give the most level-headed response to the debate yet. As if that weren't enough, he delivered another gem with his response to the question, "Would you direct a Marvel movie?" He wouldn't, but not for the reasons you'd expect. Bong Joon-ho stated that he "respect(s) the creativity that goes into superhero films" but "can’t stand people wearing tight-fitting clothes." He described seeing someone in tight clothes as "mentally difficult". Since superheroes are almost exclusively wearing snug suits, it seems that the genre is off the table for the 'Parasite' director. He made sure to add, however, that "if there is a superhero who has a very boxy costume, maybe I can try." This man really does have a right answer to everything.
