Now that Disney officially and completely owns 20th Century Fox and its upcoming movie slate, the studio has condensed the two company’s future film lineups into a single calendar, bringing about a ton of changes and announcements. Maybe the biggest of them all: Disney has confirmed the first new Star Wars movies coming after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this Christmas.

The press release says that “three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022.” Officially the dates for these three movies are: December 16, 2022, December 20, 2024, and December 18, 2026.

The every-other-year release plan has all the makings of a new Star Wars trilogy, but Disney has not yet confirmed that or any details about the movies. They have previously said that Rian Johnson, writer/director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is working on a new batch of Star Wars movies, so these could very well be those films. They have also said that the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, are getting their own Star Wars saga as well. So their project could fall into those dates. Or it’s possible that the three slots could belong to both of them in some combination. Or they might not be either!

As soon as we know more, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, 2019.
