Wichita Falls Middle School Unveils Controversial Lunch Policy
To say some parents are upset would be an understatement. In fact, many were quite livid when they found out what was going on this school year.
The school year just started and we already have controversy at one Wichita Falls middle school. Hirschi Middle School released a statement yesterday clarifying a new lunchroom policy. Apparently some parents were calling to complain or ask questions about how their kids received lunch during the first week of school. Here is what Hirschi said.
Hirschi Students Must Solve Math Problem Before Receiving Food
According to the Hirschi Middle School Facebook page, students are shown a math flash card. They then have to solve the equation, if they get wrong, they go to the back of the lunch line. If they get it wrong again, they're taught a skill to correct it and then can receive their food. Apparently some kids complained or miscommunicated that they did not receive lunch because they got a math problem wrong.
Parents are Livid at New Lunch Room Policy
Several comments started pouring in on the Facebook page about the new policy. Here are some of the more interesting ones I stumbled upon.
- 'Do teachers get asked a math question before their lunch period as well or do they get to enjoy their “30 minutes of duty-free lunch every day”?', said Kaycee Uribez
- 'So, let’s say a student has food insecurities at home, we’re now adding an extra layer of food insecurity at school? Nah. Pass. I hope whoever came up with this idea rots,' said Falcon Taylor Hinchey.
- 'So during the one break the students have during their eight hour day, you’re forcing them to continue working? If your boss did the same thing to you during your lunch break you could sue,' Cayla Ballou.
Hirschi Middle School on Texas Education Agency Radar
Just yesterday, we reported on the five school districts that the Texas Education Agency has their eye on due to consecutive years of failing grades. Wichita Falls ISD is one of those five districts because five of our schools received a D or F rating. Hirschi received a D and maybe this new lunch policy is their plan to get those grades up.
