This is so cool, that I’m almost tempted to sign up for this myself.  I’ve always had an interest in law enforcement, and love binge watching shows like Cops or Live PD.

Starting later this month, the Wichita County Sheriff’s Department is once again going to be holding its Citizens Academy, for anyone who’s interested in learning how law enforcement works.  According to the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy’s website, the program is both a public service to the community and free of charge.  Students will learn how both the sheriff’s office and law enforcement officers operate as a whole.

During this 42-hour course, students will get a behind-the-scenes look at the sheriff’s department, and learn about the criminal justice system.   A few of the topics that the academy covers include the department’s budget, criminal investigation, courthouse security, and even arson investigation.  And here’s the best part.  Everyone who enrolls in the academy will have the opportunity to test out weapons, and will even get to drive a real patrol car.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to continue their involvement with the sheriff’s department through the association’s volunteer activities.

The academy starts on March 24th and will be held every Thursday night from 6 PM to 9 PM for 14 weeks.  Anyone who’s interesting in enrolling in the Citizen’s Academy can pick up an application by stopping by the sheriff’s office at 2815 Central Freeway, Monday thru Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM.

You can also print off an application from the academy’s website by clicking here.
