RiffTrax’s Top 20 Worst Movies of the 1990s

Gee, a sequel where the lead actor didn't even want to come back doesn't live up to the original?  Get out of town!  While Sandra Bullock may be a beloved actress today and was definitely on a career upswing after 'Speed' and 'Demolition Man', she wasn't enough to save this movie from the king of extreme bland that is Jason Patrick.

I'm confused.  What is this 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III' that you speak of?  As far as I remember there was two live-action movies, a large blank spot in my memory, a CGI movie, and a new live-action film.  Weird.

This is one of several movies on the list that I think was chosen by fans for being infamous more than a bad film.  Weird?  Absolutely.  Bad film?  Not necessarily, especially when you look at other films that made the list.  Brando was definitely not in the peak of his once great career, but Val Kilmer is great in just about anything he does.

Here's my impression of the progression of opinions of this movie...

"Did you see that new movie, 'The Blair Witch Project'?  Its so creepy!  You know that's real, right?!  That's all actual footage that they found.  Wait... those are actors and this was all just fictional?  This movie sucks!"

Truly not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I think people voted for this more for J-Lo's terrible acting instead of the movie itself.

I will defend this movie because there's actually a good version of it out there.  The theatrical cut of the film is cinematic dog dookie, but was terrible mainly due to interference from the moneylenders who were funding the picture.  Sure, the script was terrible and the idea of immortals being aliens who were sent to Earth as prisoners is horrific, but watching 'Highlander II: The Renegade Cut' actually makes the film worth watching and enjoyable, fixing as much of mistakes as possible.

Its a guilty pleasure, I'll admit it.  I can't blame people for not liking the movie, but I found it enjoyable.  I'll never say its a good movie, but I can't see it being a Top 20 worst of the decade.

Here's a great idea!  Let's take a video game movie that was actually decent and successful, and then rush out a sequel with only half of the cast returning, poor special effects, terrible actors, and characters from the video games pointlessly shoved in.  How can we lose?

Bad at the time, but in the past twenty years, and in comparison to 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li', the original 'Street Fighter' is actually not that bad of a film.  Its campy and doesn't do the source material justice, but its still fun to watch and won't be a waste of time.

Let's be honest, this movie was banking on the wholesome image of Elizabeth Berkley's portrayal of Jesse Spano in 'Saved By the Bell' and then going naughty and stripping.  Beyond that, the film was a glorified soft-core porn that is watched by people today more for a laugh than genuine interest in the movie.

I'm pretty sure this movie was a result of the success of 'Dances with Wolves' and Kevin Costner thinking he could do anything.  And looking at Costner's career since, I'm starting to wonder if 'Dances with Wolves' was a fluke.  'Waterworld' was large in visual scope, being one of the most expensive films of all time, but didn't pack enough punch in basic storytelling to be a financial success.

This received over 7,000 votes?  I'm amazed over 7,000 people admitted to see this.

Pauley Shore found success with 'Encino Man' and 'Son in Law', but audiences quickly found out that two movies was more than enough of Shore's brand of comedy.  The only redeeming point to this movie is turning the sound off and fast fowarding to the scenes with Kylie Minogue.

Probably the most beloved worst film of all time, 'Troll 2' is a horrible film that has to be seen to be believed.

Bottom line, Shaq has no business doing anything off the basketball court.

Ah yes, 'Jurassic Park in New York'.  Had this been called anything but 'Godzilla' it would have had a chance to be a decent success.  But trying to live up to the legacy of a cinematic legend that is Godzilla was too much to try and the film crumbled.  The film was so despised that another Japanese Godzilla film was made where the real Godzilla easily defeated the American Godzilla in a fight.

The perfect example of a film making this list for being infamous instead of bad.  It's not a great film, but its biggest fault it not remotely living up to the original trilogy.  Sure, Jar Jar Binks and young Anakin Skywalker are painful to watch, but apart from that this is the kind of movie that suffers more due to legacy than anything else.

Arguably the worst video game movie of all time, keeping true to almost nothing from the original games apart from character names.  John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins both went on record bashing the making of the film and the film itself as terrible moments in their careers.

Not sure how this movie made the list of worst 90s films since it came out in 2000, but it sucked so bad that I'd be willing to place this on the worst of list for every decade of the 20th century.  I'm a little shocked that it didn't come in at #1.

Again, infamous, not necessarily terrible.  Its truly deserving of being on this list, but at #1?  The movie was a franchise killer, halting all plans for a follow-up, 'Batman Triumphant', and seriously harmed the directing credibility of the once impressive Joel Shumacher.  But the film suffered from studio involvement more than anything, showing that when a studio makes a movie with licensing in mind over making an actually good film, nothing good can come of it.
