As the annual Hotter'N Hell Hundred cycling event approaches, more and more cyclists are hitting the streets to train. The last weekend of August thousands of riders will arrive in Wichita Falls to participate in one of the largest century rides in the country.

With that in mind, the Wichita Falls Police Department has a few safety tips to be aware of as you enjoy the ride.

Drivers: Slow down, don't get in a hurry, watch for bicycle traffic, and be prepared to stop. Cyclists are entitled to the same rights on the road as motorists, so treat them as you would any slow-moving vehicle. Being patient can save lives. Wait until it's safe to pass a cyclists. Give cyclists the right of way when it's theirs. Allow extra time for cyclists to go through intersections.

Bicycle riders: never ride against the flow of traffic, always wear a helmet, look out for road hazards and obey traffic signs and signals.

Whether you are on a bicycle or driving a car, being respectful of each other's presence will go a long way in providing for a safe event for everyone.

This year's Hotter'N Hell events are scheduled for August 24th through the 27th, with the ride on Saturday August 26th.
