I don’t know about you, but I love discovering hidden gems.

Any time I travel, I make it a point to try a new restaurant along the way. I have nothing against any of the great restaurant chains out there, but I prefer a good old-fashioned mom and pop cafe. For my money, those are always the best of the best.

The Pickett House Restaurant is part of Heritage Village, located one mile west of Woodville on Highway 190. It’s a replica village of the pioneer days, made to resemble a small farm and timber community of the mid-1800s to early 1900s.

The food is served in a boarding house atmosphere in which the customers all sit at long tables with other customers. It’s all-you-can-eat fried chicken, dumplings, sides, and cornbread, placed right in the center of the tables.

It may sound a bit gimmicky, but the word is that the food is out of this world. The Pickett House Restaurant is universally considered one of the best homestyle eateries in the Lone Star State. Folks travel from all around for a chance to dig into their famous fried chicken and dumplings.
