Maine and New Hampshire got walloped with rain from late Saturday night all the way through to early Monday morning. Add to that some heavy winds during the overnight hours and we had a pretty nasty storm. It just never seemed to want to end.

All that water has to go somewhere and I got some in my basement which in the three years we've owned this house, has never happened. Luckily it was confined to one corner and along the seams of the floor.

It's likely others throughout Maine and New Hampshire weren't as lucky as we were.

Whenever we get a lot of rain, we Mainers especially, love to wonder how much snow that would have been if it was cold enough. That ratio varies quite a bit depending on temperature and the density of the snow. One easy ratio to figure out is 10:1 which usually occurs when the temperature is around 30 degrees. That means for every inch of rain that falls it would be 10 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service in Gray released a map from observations around Maine and New Hampshire to show us just how much rain we got. Downeast Maine got the jackpot numbers and they slowly taper off as you head west. The most rain appears to have fallen in the Gardiner and Whitefield area. with 6.31 inches.

Turning to our ratio of rain to snow, that would be over five feet of snow!

Here's the map released by the National Weather Service today. Find your town on it and you'll get a general idea of how much rain you got.
