Cemetery Hidden in the Illinois Woods Abandoned for 120 Years
You never know what you might find when you're hiking in the woods of Illinois. A new exploration uncovered what appears to be a forgotten family cemetery hidden somewhere in Illinois near a pond that's been abandoned for at least 120 years.
Decaying Midwest didn't reveal the exact location of this sad cemetery. This is the backstory they did share about what they found:
Today, we are exploring an abandoned cemetery hidden in the woods somewhere in Illinois. It looks to be a small family cemetery that was forgotten about and became overgrown. Not much is known about the people buried here because the headstones are not easy to identify.
The gravestones they found reveal death dates of 1874, 1888 and the most recent was 1902.
It seems that this family tried to create a plot that would be overlooking a quiet lake where the sun would shine on the gravestones through the trees.
This video is one of the reasons I recommend following Decaying Midwest on YouTube if you enjoy seeing abandoned places. They have a strict moral code they follow which they share on each video which reads:
The code of urbex (urban exploration) is to leave the location just as you found it. Don't steal anything, vandalize, or spray paint. Take only pictures and leave only footprints.
Best to not give exact locations to avoid providing vandals with an easy target. After all, this place was created by a family as their final resting place. Best to pay your respects and leave it untouched the way it was intended.
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. By doing so you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing on private property.
